Overview
ChartCipher is an AI-powered music analytics platform launched through a joint venture Yael created between Hit Songs Deconstructed and AI company MyPart. She also established a data partnership with Billboard, enabling ChartCipher to analyze the sonic, lyrical, and compositional characteristics of songs on the Billboard charts and connect those characteristics with chart and market performance.
To drive subscriptions, ChartCipher needed a go-to-market strategy that could convert an audience that did not necessarily believe it needed the product: music-industry professionals, artists, producers, and songwriters who often assume they already understand what is trending. Before ChartCipher’s analytics could be positioned as essential, the strategy first had to reveal the gap between industry intuition and what the chart data actually showed.
The Work
- →Identified perceived knowledge of chart trends as the central barrier to subscription
- →Developed a two-stage strategy: expose the knowledge gap, then position ChartCipher as the solution
- →Created an interactive quiz based on real ChartCipher analysis of Billboard Hot 100 trends, with questions about genre, key, timbre, and other song qualities designed to expose gaps in prospects' chart knowledge
- →Built in lead capture by requiring quiz completers to provide their email before viewing their results
- →Developed a post-quiz email conversion series that showed leads how ChartCipher could help them better inform songwriting, production, and business decisions
- →Promoted the quiz through email and social channels and expanded its reach through PR and influencer outreach
- →Measured the funnel from quiz completion through email capture and paid subscription
Engagement
The Results
Most quiz participants scored poorly, validating the intuition-versus-data gap the strategy was designed to expose. This created a natural opening to position ChartCipher as a resource for understanding and applying current chart trends. Of those who completed the quiz, 57% provided their email to view their results. Eight percent of those leads converted to paid subscriptions at the $87-per-month launch price.
